Abstract:

Snapshots documenting Wilmington and Terminal Island shipyards in the Port of Los Angeles (Los Angeles Harbor), including cargo ships, freight and dockworkers, with an emphasis on activities in the cargo holds of ships and the loading and unloading of goods. Various types of freight are depicted, especially construction materials (steel girders, beams, billets, pipes, and lumber) as well as flour, soap, etc. Freight containers depicted include barrels, drums, crates, boxes and wrappers. Includes many wharf scenes depicting cranes and rail cars. Also includes a U.S. government-issued identification card pin ("Navy pass, Terminal Island") for dock worker L.F. Sawyers of Pope & Talbot, Inc.
